93 percent of adult Pinoys say DSWD’s feeding program is helpful

Posted on 31 January 2013.

A Pulse Asia survey conducted on November 23-29, 2012 indicated that 93 percent of Filipinos are saying that the Supplementary Feeding Program (SFP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is helpful to the children in their barangay. This significant development is complemented by the findings that nearly seven out of ten Filipino adults are aware of the SFP.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman said that, “The high awareness rating and the recognition that the program is helpful indicate that we are on the right track in addressing the problem of malnutrition among children.  This is also an indication that government resources are being used appropriately.”

The findings  state that majority of Filipino adults  (54 percent) are able to identify DSWD as the agency that conducted SFP in their barangay in the three – month period preceding the survey. Furthermore, half of the 69% who are aware of supplemental feeding programs were beneficiaries of such a program.  Secretary Soliman acknowledged and thanked the Department’s partners in the program such as the local government units (LGUs), private sector, and non-government organizations (NGOs) for their continued participation in program implementation and monitoring.

Secretary Soliman explained  that DSWD will intensify the implementation of SFP in areas that indicate low awareness, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR)  and in urban areas.

SFP provides hot meals to school children enrolled in day care centers and  in supervised neighborhood play (SNP). Under this program, the parents of day care children will prepare the food following the menu of locally available foods. In 2012, the government, through the DSWD, allocated P2.8 billion providing feeding to more than 1.7 million children. ###
