Magnitude 5.0 quake jolts Cagayan January 29, 2016
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocked the province of Cagayan in Northern Luzon on Friday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the earthquake occurred at 10:29 a.m., with its epicenter traced at 79 kilometers northeast of Claveria, Cagayan.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 89 kilometers, was felt at Intensity 2 in Claveria and Laoag City in Ilocos Norte.

The agency said there was no casualty or damage reported from the quake, but aftershocks were expected.
Phivolcs said an average of 20 earthquakes hit the country daily since the Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire — where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are frequent due to friction between shifting tectonic plates.
