NDRRMC Monitors Effects of TY Paolo

20 October 2017- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) continuously monitors the effects of Typhoon Paolo at the NDRRM Operations Center, Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

As of 11:00AM, today TY Paolo has slightly changed its course and is now moving in a north Northeast direction. It was located 860 km East of Basco, Batanes with a maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph moving north Northeast at 16 kph.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the 1,350 km diameter of the typhoon. It is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by morning of Sunday, 22 October. No tropical cyclone warning signal is raised for Typhoon Paolo.

Meanwhile, there are two other weather systems which prevail in the country. The Low Pressure Area estimated 105 km south of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro along with the southwestern windflow and the outer rainbands of TY Paolo will continue to bring scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms over Visayas and areas in MIMAROPA and Bicol.

Residents in these areas are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides due to moderate to occasionally heavy rains.

Also, gale warning is raised in the seaboards of Northern and Southern Luzon and Visayas, eastern seaboard of Central Luzon, as well as the western, northern and eastern seaboards of Mindanao. Small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves.

The NDRRM Operations Center has monitored incidents of flooding, landslides and power outage in Surigao del Norte, Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga City.  Likewise, report on the declaration of State of Calamity in Zamboanga City due to continuous heavy rains was monitored and shall be confirmed through a resolution.

“We are closely coordinating with our Regional and Local DRRM Offices on the effects of strong winds and heavy rains brought about by the prevailing weather systems in the country. Likewise, residents and communities affected are being assisted through the LGUs,” says NDRRMC Executive Director and Civil Defense Administrator Usec Ricardo B Jalad.
