Statement: The Presidential Spokesperson on the start of Lent
Statement of Secretary Edwin Lacierda:
On the observance of Ash Wednesday and start of Lent
[March 5, 2014]
Today, the Christian world marks the
beginning of Lent, a solemn season of prayer and sacrifice. As we humble
ourselves and reflect on the sinful nature of mankind, we are all
reminded that redemption is made available through the gift of faith.
For those undertaking the
Ash Wednesday rituals today, let us bear in mind what Scripture says:
For dust you are and to dust you will return. This reminds us that it is
only through authentic service to our neighbors, and the commitment to
truth and justice, that we can bring about meaningful change in our
respective communities.
As a nation that has been blessed with
the guidance and ineffable compassion of the Redeemer, we are all asked
in this special season to take this opportunity to undertake small
sacrifices, and to examine our individual consciences. It is by doing so
that we grow in faith and humility, which strengthen our common bond as
a nation.
Let us therefore continue to spread the
good news in every sphere of human activity and strive to be beacons of
hope, so that those who doubt and despair may see that, by working
together, we can truly build a more just and inclusive Philippines
