PRRD to visit ‘Rosita’ victims in Mt. Province: Bong Go

MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to visit the victims of Typhoon Rosita in Northern Luzon, particularly landslide-hit areas in Mountain Province, his former top aide said Wednesday.

Former Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go said Duterte’s trip was scheduled on November 1.

“Susubukan naming pasukin subalit based on assessment at advance team na pumunta doon ay hindi talaga accessible ‘yung roads (We will try to enter, but based on the assessment and the advance team who went there, the roads were impassable),” he said in an interview during his visit to fire victims in Quiapo, Manila.

“Not passable at talagang gumuho ‘yung daan patungo doon at even the landing site po ay mahihirapan dumaan ‘yung ating Pangulo (It’s impassable and the road towards the area already collapsed, it’s also difficult on the landing site),” he added.

For the meantime, President Duterte, he said, will conduct an aerial inspection before heading to Cauayan, Isabela to commence a meeting among stakeholders.

Go said the President will convene his Cabinet secretaries and local officials, including the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, to assess the situation in the region.

A total of 111,639 persons were affected by the typhoon, which hit the Philippines this week.

Of the figure, 50,846 are being served inside evacuation centers.

As Rosita battered the region, deadly landslides were triggered. Dozens were reported missing due to the disaster.

Go, for his part, said it is high time to plan the building of permanent evacuation centers as the typhoon, which pummelled the region followed “Ompong,” a similarly strong storm in September.

“Dalawang beses na po itong nangyari so panahon na po na magkaroon na tayo ng safe na evacuation center at kumpleto ang pasilidad(This has happened twice, so it’s time for us to have safe evacuation centers with complete facilities),” he said.

“Ang ibig kong sabihin, may CR at higaan, maging komportable naman sila habang naghihintay na makabalik sila sa kanilang mga tirahan(What I mean is, it has CR and bed, so people would be comfortable while waiting to go home),” he noted.

Go just recently resigned as Duterte’s special assistant but he said he “tags along” with the president on certain occasions.

“I am resigned from my government post but I am not resigned from helping our fellow men, ang ating mga kapatid na Pilipino (our fellow Filipinos),” he said.

“Katulad (kahapon) mayroon po nasunugan sa Cagayan De Oro nagkataon naman po na sumama ako sa Pangulo nag-distribute sila ng titulo, sumaglit muna ako doon sa mga nasunugan doon sa Cagayan De Oro may mga 35 families po doon na nasa evacuation center (Like yesterday, a fire hit Cagayan de Oro and I went with the President where he distributed land titles. I went to fire victims in Cagayan de Oro, around 35 families were in evacuation centers),” he added. ( Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PNA)
