President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will join other leaders
next week as he attends the 2019 Association of Southeast Asian
Nations-Republic of Korea (ASEAN-ROK) Commemorative Summit that will
discuss the current direction of the country’s partnership and
cooperation on areas of mutual concern with other nations.
President Duterte leaves Manila for Busan to join the summit to be held from November 25 to 26, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for the Office of ASEAN Affairs Junever Mahilum-West said during a pre-departure briefing in Malacañang on Friday.
The ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit will be attended by heads of governments or states of ASEAN member states and by President Moon Jae-in of South Korea.
Two outcome documents are expected to come out during the forthcoming ASEAN-ROK Summit and other side events, Mahilum-West said.
These are the ASEAN-ROK Joint Vision Statement for Peace, Prosperity,
and Partnership and the Co-Chairs’ Statement on the ASEAN-Republic of
Korea Commemorative Summit.
The two outcome documents represent the strong partnership between the ASEAN and South Korea.
The President will be accompanied by his Cabinet members. Among those who will join the President as members of the Philippine delegation are lead agencies for the three pillars of the ASEAN Community.
These agencies include the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for political and security community pillar, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for the economic community pillar, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the socio-cultural community pillar.
Bilateral meeting with South Korean leader
The Philippines and South Korea may seal several agreements during a bilateral meeting between President Duterte and President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit in Busan.
Assistant Secretary Mahilum-West confirmed during Friday’s briefing the scheduled bilateral talks between President Duterte and the South Korean leader.
“We expect some agreements to be signed on certain areas of cooperation,” she said.
According to the Foreign Affairs official, the Philippines is eyeing to sign agreements on education, tourism, social security, and fisheries, noting however that the negotiations are still ongoing. Also, the country’s defense procurement with South Korea is in the works, she noted.
President Duterte last met President Moon during the 35th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Nonthaburi, Thailand, earlier this month. The two leaders met during the ASEAN Plus Three Summit and the East Asia Summit and shared their views regarding regional and international issues affecting the region.
It is the President’s second visit to South Korea since assuming office and his first time to visit Busan. The President previously traveled to Seoul, South Korea for an official visit in June 2018. PND
