President Rodrigo Roa Duterte made a new warning
Thursday saying he may deploy the police and the military to implement
strict quarantine rules if people continue to ignore government
guidelines especially on social distancing.
People not following social distancing rules drew the ire of the President. There were reports that a throng congregated in a public market.
Some even organized cockfighting and boxing events despite the current enhanced community quarantine.
“Kaya ito ngayon ang sitwasyon. I’m just asking for your disiplina kaunti. Kasi ‘pag ayaw ninyo, ayaw ninyong maniwala, mag-take over ang military pati pulis. I am ordering them now to be ready,” President Duterte said in a televised address to the nation.
“Ang pulis pati military ang mag-enforce sa distance social — distance at ‘yang curfew. Sila na. Parang martial law na rin. Mamili kayo. Ayaw ko pero pagka naipit na ‘yung bayan at walang disiplina kayo…”
He also made a renewed call to local government units to enforce the quarantine guidelines set by a national task force to help contain the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
In his previous address, President Duterte warned local officials that they would face arrest if they fail to strictly implement lockdown rules.
The President commended the response of the government to the pandemic saying the timely implementation of enhanced community quarantine slowed down the spread of the virus.
At the same time, the President appealed for patience adding he is ready to lift the quarantine if a cure or a vaccine is developed and become commercially available.
Based on the latest data, there are 5,660 infected individuals in the country with 362 deaths. A total of 435 people recovered from the disease. PND
