Gatchalian, Zubiri call for tighter crackdown on frat hazing
CHEd, DepEd urged to campaign vs hazing
MANILA, Philippines – Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri on Friday urged the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and the Department of Education (DepEd) to raise awareness on the consequences of fraternity hazing.
The senator on Tuesday similarly called for a crackdown on physical violence in initiation rites after the death of a Grade 11 student in Nueva Ecija and the conviction of 10 fratmen in the case of law freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III.
A co-author of the 2018 anti-hazing law, Zubiri said in a statement, “We should look at the implementing rules and regulations. Get the [Department of the Interior and Local Government] involved. Get the CHEd involved. Get the DepEd involved.”
The 2018 act expanded the 1995 law to ban “all forms of hazing in fraternities, sororities, and organizations in school, including citizens’ military training and citizens’ army training.”
