Marcos departs for South Korea to join Apec Economic Meeting

USAN, South Korea — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. left for South Korea on Thursday to attend the 32nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

The plane carrying Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and the rest of the Philippine delegation departed at 12:45 pm.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Education Secretary Sonny Angara, and Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III were the designated caretakers of the country while Marcos is away.

The summit will run from October 30 to November 2. Upon arrival in Busan, Marcos will meet with the Filipino community.

This year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be hosted at the Gyeongju Arts Center in North Gyeongsang province.

The president’s participation will focus on advancing the Philippines’ economic interests, strengthening ties with fellow APEC members, and reaffirming the country’s commitment to Apec’s vision of a more open and dynamic regional economy.

Key highlights of the meeting include two sessions expected to produce the leaders’ declaration and three statements on artificial intelligence, demographic change, and cultural and creative industries.

Marcos is also scheduled to join a dialogue with the Apec Business Advisory Council and deliver a speech at the Apec CEO Summit, which will gather representatives from the manufacturing and semiconductor sectors.

Established in 1989, the regional economic forum seeks to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific region to promote greater prosperity for its people.

Marcos’s attendance this year marks his return to the summit after skipping last year’s meeting in Peru to focus on the government’s disaster response efforts. /mcm
