President Duterte on senatorial bets: ‘I only choose candidates who will serve the best interest of the public’

Koronadal City, SOUTH COTABATO – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Tuesday, March 26 assured the public that he had chosen his senatorial bets in the upcoming midterm elections based on the best interest of the public and the government.

“Ang selection ko talaga is based on what is to the best interest of the public and government. Iyon lang. Wala akong hinihingi na iba,” said President Duterte during the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) South Cotabato campaign rally at the South Cotabato Sports Complex here.

President Duterte said he hopes to resolve at least some of the country’s most pressing problems before his term ends.

According to the President, he chooses government workers whom he trusts to serve with honesty as well as fulfill his mandate. This includes the government’s war against drugs, eliminating corruption, and restoring law and order.

“These are the guys who stayed long enough to know the art of governance and just to be honest, that’s all. Iyan lang naman ang hinihingi ko,” he explained.

“It’s very hard to really develop kung walang law and order. Kung walang law and order and everything…everybody is in a quandary, anong gagawin niya? I mean, I think [we are] being swallowed by the biggest threat of them all and that is the drug problem,” he added.

He then warned public officials from making the mistake of getting involved in drugs, corruption, and other crimes, underscoring his determination to give Filipinos a better life.

“Iyan, hindi ko talaga matanggap. Hindi ko talaga matanggap ‘yan ke ma-mayor ka,” he said.

“So iyan na lang ang iiwan ko sa inyo. Marami na akong nagawa. It’s about too late to stop,” he added.

Highlighting the conflict in Mindanao, the President shared that he hopes to personally talk to Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari in a bid to achieve lasting peace.

“Then, dito sa Mindanao, we were also grappling with so many fronts. I am dealing with the drug problem and, at the same time, I am in a hurry to strike a deal with Nur Misuari,” he said.

“We have to deal with him again and I hope that we could find space, the time and the issues that would be more acceptable to everybody, to both the Lumads, the Christian, and the Moro,” he added.

Around 15,000 people composed of the senatorial candidates, elected local government officials in Region 12, PDP-Laban supporters, volunteers, and other guests participated in the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) South Cotabato campaign rally. ###PND
