PH boosting military capability for defense, peace — PBBM

The Philippines is boosting its military capability to defend itself against any act of aggression from another country.

President Ferdinand Marcos said the country is in the process of finding suppliers for its modernization program called ‘Horizon 3’.

“We are hoping that these acts are just a deterrence to work for peace. It has been going on for many years now – this long term plan of increasing the capabilities of our military and civilians such as the Coast Guard in the Philippines,” said President Marcos during the question and answer portion at the 21st IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Singapore’s officials were in attendance including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, IISS Executive Chairman British Sir John Chipman, as well as government officials from the Philippines and other countries around the world.

President Marcos made the remarks when asked about his vision for the force posture of the Philippines by the end of his term.

The defense of the national territory is the prime responsibility of the government under the Unilateral Defense Plan, he said. “We have to build up our capabilities in the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” he added.

When asked if there’s an incident that ended up killing a Filipino service man or a personnel from the coast guard, military or navy, the President said it would certainly increase the level of government response.

He said that if a Filipino, whether a serviceman or a plain citizen, is killed by a willful act, that is “I think very, very close to what we define as an act of war and therefore we will respond accordingly.” | PND
