PH boosting presence in global engagements on planet preservation

Indicative of its commitment to preserving the planet, the Philippines is increasing its presence in global conferences on biodiversity, climate action, and sustainability.

In a Malacañang Insider interview on Friday, Environment Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga reported the list of key environmental dialogues in which the country will participate.

The first is the upcoming Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) from October 14 to 18, 2024, she said.

Hosted by the Philippines, the conference will be held in partnership with the United Nations
Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

According to Loyzaga, it aims to expedite progress in reducing disaster risk. The event is significant given that “disaster risk reduction has become part of our daily life.”

The country will also play a major role in the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), particularly in advocating for species conservation and protection.

“As you know, the Philippines is one of the most mega-diverse countries in the world. We have over 52,000 species, about half of which are not found anywhere else in the world,” Loyzaga said.

“Sadly, around 2,000 of which are critically endangered or threatened or vulnerable,” she added.

“So, we do have a responsibility to eliminate what we would call the possibility of extinction of these species and therefore very pointed programs are necessary in order to protect the species that are critically endangered in the country.”

The CBD COP 16 will be held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024, Loyzaga reported.

For climate negotiation and action, COP 29 will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.

Next month, the country will also participate in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

“In September, there will be the UN General Assembly and the Philippines is once again, of course, also in a very important role here as a developing country that is on the way to achieving its SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals),” Loyzaga said. PND
