Marcos seen to back Blue Economy Act, says Palace
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is likely to give his green light to the proposed Blue Economy Act, which seeks to enrich the country’s marine resources and protect the rights and welfare of fisherfolk, a Palace official said on Thursday.
The proposed measure was passed by the Senate (Senate Bill No. 2450) in August last year, and its counterpart in the House of Representatives (House Bill No. 9662) was also approved in 2023.
At a briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro was asked whether President Marcos supports the Blue Economy Act, to which she responded affirmatively.
“Yes. When it comes to anything that improves our environment and uplifts the lives of the people—especially our fishermen—the President will not oppose it,” she said in Filipino.
The proposed Blue Economy Act has also received renewed support from Senators Loren Legarda and Risa Hontiveros, who both hope it will be included among the priority measures in the President’s upcoming State of the Nation Address (Sona).

“It’s not just about the West Philippine Sea; it’s also about the rights and welfare of our fisherfolk and the health of our marine ecosystems. So yes, hopefully, that’s one of the many important things the President will mention in his Sona,” she added. /jpv
