Cardinal Advincula: Pray for peace, end of war in Middle East
MANILA, Philippines — Cardinal Jose Advincula on Good Friday urged the faithful to pray for the end of war in the Middle East, emphasizing that its effects are deeply felt by many Filipinos, especially by the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families and the rising cost of fuel.
In his homily during the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Manila, Advincula likened the sacrifices of Jesus Christ on the cross to the people who are affected by the conflict in the Middle East.
“His hardships are seen in every innocent life affected by the war. A clear example of this is what’s happening to the Middle East. While it is very far from us, we can really feel its effects,” Advincula said.
He noted the cities left in destruction and lives lost due to the war. He also said that many families of OFWs are scared for the welfare of their relatives, as well as drivers who struggle with their livelihoods due to the oil price hike.
“Many families are suffering everyday, that’s why the war that is far from us scars our nation,” he added.
With this, he said that the Good Friday reminds the faithful to observe these three things: be silent but reflect; sympathize with their hardships; and pray for peace.
He then encouraged the people to reflect, emphasizing that Jesus Christ’s silence amid the accusations against him was not a sign of weakness, but trust to His Father. Second, the cardinal then urged the faithful to be one with the hardships of those affected by the war, noting that efforts do not have to be big or small for them to matter.
“He calls us to be present with compassion. It does not have to be big, but just enough to listen and show that we care. Through simple ways, we become an instrument of God for others,” he said.
Lastly, the cardinal asked for peace through prayers, echoing Pope Leo XIV’s call to put an end to the war. He said that through prayers, the faithful are sharing the love they receive from Jesus Christ.
“This is our strength. Pope Leo is asking the whole Catholic Church to pray for peace, especially in places affected by the war and even here in Manila, we are not relatively far from what they are going through,” he expressed. /das
