Catholic faithful asked to pray for world peace
MANILA – Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula on Wednesday asked the clergy and the faithful to pray with an additional intention for world peace on Good Friday.
“During the Celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday, I request all parishes and communities to pray an additional intention for world peace. Paschalis Solemnitatis provides that the Diocesan Bishop may prescribe additional special intentions 'in case of grave public necessity' (no. 70),” he said in Circular No. 2026 - 38.
The request is in response to the call of Pope Leo XVI to pray to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.
“In his Angelus Message last Palm Sunday Homily, Pope Leo XVI invited the Church to 'raise our prayer to the Prince of Peace that he may sustain the peoples wounded by war and open concrete paths to reconciliation and peace'. He said, at the beginning of Holy Week, our prayers are more than ever with the Christians of the Middle East, who are suffering the consequences of a brutal conflict and, in many cases, are unable to observe fully the liturgies of these holy days,” the Cardinal said.
“Just as the Church contemplates the mystery of the Lord's Passion, we cannot forget those who today are truly sharing in his suffering. Their ordeal challenges all our consciences. Heeding this call of the Holy Father, we turn our gaze to Jesus, who reveals himself as King of Peace," he added.
The following shall be prayed:
For Peace in the World
"Let us pray for peace throughout the world, especially in regions torn by conflict, that God, in His mercy, may dispel violence, cleanse hearts of greed and the abuse of power, and restore harmony among nations.
O God, merciful and strong, who crush wars and cast down the proud, be pleased to banish violence swiftly from our midst and to wipe away all tears, so that we may all truly deserve to be called your children.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
Amen."
“Together, let us come in supplication to the foot of the Cross, and there bring the sighs of sorrow and the hopes for peace of all humanity. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, may God grant us 'peace through His Son's blood on the Cross' (Col 1:20),” Advincula said. (PNA)
