ASEAN leaders seek end to Mideast conflict, reopening of Hormuz

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday said leaders of the

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are calling for the immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, stressing that peace remains the essential first step toward resolving the escalating conflict.

“Peace. Peace. It’s that simple. Peace,” Marcos said in a press conference following the 48th ASEAN Summit here when asked what the regional bloc was calling for from parties involved in the conflict.

Marcos said ASEAN foreign ministers had earlier issued a statement urging all sides to stop hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and pursue a lasting diplomatic solution involving Iran, Israel and the United States.

“That’s the first step, because we will achieve absolutely nothing until there is peace,” the President said.

He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the conflict, saying ASEAN remains concerned over the possibility of renewed fighting despite ceasefire efforts.

“We now are in this limbo situation where we don’t know how long it’s going to last. We don’t know when the next encounter is going to be,” Marcos said.

“It’s a very difficult situation. So again, until the fighting ends, until the bombings end, then it’s very difficult to put together any kind of solution… That is why the call essentially is peace now,” he stressed.

Southeast Asian leaders on Friday also adopted the ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on the Response to the Middle East Crisis, expressing serious concern over the rapidly evolving conflict and its implications on regional trade, energy security, food supply and the welfare of ASEAN nationals.

The statement urged parties involved to maintain restraint, avoid actions that could worsen tensions and continue negotiations toward a lasting peaceful resolution.

ASEAN leaders likewise reiterated the importance of maintaining safe and unimpeded passage through international waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, amid disruptions affecting global energy and trade flows. (PNA)
