PBBM underscores media’s role in combating fake news
Speaking at the presidential luncheon hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines at Diamond Hotel Philippines in Manila, Marcos said the media and government share a common interest in protecting credibility, which he described as the foundation of their work and the bedrock of public trust.
“The Philippine government recognizes that a free, independent, and responsible press remains indispensable to any democratic society. This is why we consider media practitioners, including our photojournalists, as our partners in promoting good governance and transparency,” Marcos said.
Marcos said information, whether factual or fabricated, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated or deliberately manipulated, can spread instantly across digital platforms, posing challenges to public trust.
He warned that uncertainty can cause markets to hesitate, polarize people and weaken public discourse.
“Ultimately, effective governance is not measured solely by what the government builds, but also by the trust that it earns from the people that we serve,” Marcos said.
“In fostering that trust, a responsible and independent media plays an indispensable role in informing the public, in scrutinizing those in power, and helping ensure that facts prevail over speculation and fake news.”
Marcos also renewed his commitment to defend and uphold press freedom, saying his conviction “remains unchanged.”
He said the government remains committed to protecting the public's right to accurate information.
The President cited the launch of OPLAN Contra Fake News, which seeks to protect the public from disinformation and hold those responsible accountable.
He also cited the work of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security in strengthening legal assistance, coordination and cybercrime response mechanisms to better protect media practitioners. (PNA)
