Marcos secures investments, stronger ties in Singapore trip
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. returned to the Philippines on Thursday evening from his “most productive” working visit to Singapore, where he boosted bilateral ties with the wealthy state-city and attracted business leaders to invest in the country.
Marcos met Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and had meetings with business and executive meetings.
He also attended the Milken Institute’s Roundtable Discussion with regional business leaders.
“During my courtesy call on Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, we affirmed the strength of our bilateral relations amidst global shocks and conflicts,” the president said in his arrival statement.
The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation in trade and investment, artificial intelligence (AI), education, healthcare, environmental protection and people-to-people exchanges.
Manila and Singapore also ensured a smooth transition as the latter takes over the chairship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) next year.
“With the Philippines and Singapore holding successive Asean chairships, we underscored our shared commitment to a stronger, unified Asean,” Marcos said.
The president also met with telecommunications giant Singtel Group and private equity firm ABC Impact to discuss their continuing investments and expansion plans in the Philippines.
“During the high-level business meetings with leading Singaporean companies and investors, I underscored the Philippines’ commitment to accelerating digital transformation, strengthening critical infrastructure, and expanding access to quality healthcare,” the president said.
Marcos promoted the Philippines as an investment destination backed by a growing digital economy, skilled workforce and continuing economic reforms.
He said discussions with the Singaporean companies and investors centered on digital technology, telecommunications, data centers, AI and healthcare, sectors seen as key to sustaining long-term economic growth.
During the Milken Institute’s Roundtable Discussion, Marcos pitched the country’s investment opportunities, citing the Luzon Economic Corridor, the Public-Private Partnership Code, and the Green Lanes for Strategic Investments as measures designed to accelerate project proposals and approvals to eliminate regulatory bottlenecks and to attract more high-value investments.
As a newly designated upper middle-income country with solid macroeconomic fundamentals, the Philippines offers a secure, transparent, and stable environment for businesses to thrive,” Marcos said. /das
