Palace denies PBBM role in impeachment bid against him

MANILA – Malacañang on Friday denied President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s involvement in the filing of impeachment complaints against him.

The denial came after former Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor called the impeachment complaint lodged by lawyer Andre de Jesus a “scam,” alleging that Marcos had a hand in blocking additional cases filed by other parties.

“Mike Defensor should substantiate his accusation against Atty. De Jesus,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said in a text message, in response to Defensor’s allegation.

The first impeachment complaint, which was endorsed by Pusong Pinoy party-list Rep. Jernie Nisay, has been met with skepticism, with the opposition groups dismissing it as a “scripted distraction.”

A second impeachment complaint by progressive groups and a third filed by lawyers and former lawmakers allied with the Dutertes were submitted to the House Office of the Secretary General on Thursday, but were not accepted since Secretary Cheloy Garafil was unavailable.

Defensor, who was among the complainants in the third case, alleged that Marcos influenced Garafil’s office in refusing to accept the complaints.

He also claimed that the Marcos administration deliberately avoids listening to or addressing public grievances.

Castro maintained that Marcos had no involvement in the impeachment complaint, noting that De Jesus had already admitted that he worked as counsel for the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan chaired by former president Rodrigo Duterte.

“We have nothing to do with their bickering,” she said.

Castro on Tuesday said the impeachment complaint against Marcos could hurt the Philippine economy as it could affect investors’ confidence in the President. (PNA)
